Roaring River Dam Removal Underway

The Roaring River Dam will soon be a memory.

Crews started removing the dam Tuesday morning. TWRA spokesman Mime Barnes said last week the decision to remove the aging dam became pretty easy.

“Knowing that there was a time that it was thought it was a good thing and that we didn’t really need it at this point in time and seeing the benefit for wildlife and the waterway itself, folks within our organization reached out to other groups and got the ball rolling,” Barnes said.

Removing the dam allows wildlife habitats to merge, Barnes said.

The Roaring River Dam was built in 1976 in Jackson County, just before Cordell Hull Lake. It was meant to protect species of fish upriver, but it hasn’t been effective.
