Many visitors and vendors are in the Upper Cumberland this weekend to attend the 39th annual Rollercoaster Yard Sale.
The yard sale is a big loop that starts in Temple Hill, KY and swings down to Byrdstown and Livingston, and loops through Celina back to Temple Hill. Temple Hill Lions Club Member Donnie Alexander said a lady started the yard sale in 1986 but the reason it is called the Rollercoaster Yard Sale is not exactly known.
“Here on Hwy. 63 in Temple Hill down into Tompkinsville it is curvy and it is hilly,” Alexander said. “And the only way I figure it is the way they got the name rollercoaster yard sale is because of Hwy. 63 being the way that it is. It is just like riding a rollercoaster.”
Alexander said everyone can enjoy the yard sale as it offers everything from junk to antiques. Alexander said he believes the bonding people have during the week long event is why the event is such a big hit every year.
“People just like to get out and meet people,” Alexander said. “I know since I’ve been taking care of it here at the fairgrounds I’ve made a lot of friends and people just enjoy getting out and doing this.”
Clay County Chamber of Commerce Director Doug Young said the yard sale brings a big economic benefit to the communities in the Upper Cumberland.
“It brings some fresh money into a county,” Young said. “And when you are bringing money like that into a small county like Clay that money turns over about seven times so it ends up being a significant amount of money.”
The Rollercoaster Yard Sale will end on Saturday, October 5th. You know what they say another man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
