Robinson: White’s Animal Shelter Will Remain In Place Until Landfill Sell

White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said the Animal Shelter will not be renovated or relocated until the land it sits on is sold.

The Animal Shelter currently sits on land that would be included if and when the landfill is sold. Robinson said it does not make sense to move the facility now in case the selling of the landfill falls through. White County is currently taking bids on the land.

“The original footprint of the building and everything is in good shape,” Robinson said. “Over the years they’ve added on some pens and stuff and some of that has got to the point it needs some upkeep and some remodeling I guess you’d say.”

Robinson said he does not see any renovations happening to the shelter in the future, because the county does not want to put money into a building they will eventually vacate. Robinson said it could take up to two years to sell the property. He said the shelter is in good enough shape to wait for a remodel or relocation until then.

“If we end up not selling the property, or we change our mode of operation there, there would be no need to relocate then,” Robinson said. “We could just invest in what we got, make it better. We don’t need as they say to reinvent the wheel.”

Shelter Manager Sarah Lawson has been attending County Commission Meetings with volunteers asking the board for help renovating the property. Robinson said he has been working closely with the shelter and volunteers to try and come up with a workable solution.

“The shelter itself is in excellent shape, very nice shelter,” Robinsons said. “It’s just some of the pens and stuff we’ve added on trying to save more animals that’s where the problem is. The actual shelter itself is in good shape.”
