Pickett County has seen an increase of retirees moving into the Dale Hallow Lake area.
As of 2018, 28 percent of the Pickett County population is 65 years or older. Chamber of Commerce Director Bill Robbins said over the past few years, retiree numbers have steadily rose.
“Some folks have been living away from here that were actually born and raised in the area,” Robbins said. “Then, we have lots of people that have been visiting us over the years that like the area here and retire here or move back, because they like the area.”
Robbins said Pickett County is not advertised as a retirement designation. The low cost of living and no building permits brings people back to the county, Robbins said.
“We have no zoning or building codes for the county or city,” Robbins said. “What codes that do have to be met are for electrical service, water and water system codes.”
Robbins said people, who visited Dale Hallow Lake in the past, are returning to the area for the outdoors and small population.
