Crossville City Council members approved a motion Tuesday to continue negotiations with NextSite, a retail consulting firm that’s working to attract new business to the city.
City Manager Greg Wood said it’s important that negotiations continue because NextSite has found a developer that has an option on property just North of the Chevy dealership.
“We need to bring in retail establishments to enhance our capabilities for the industrial jobs that we want as well,” Wood said. “Plus, we have a leakage situation, which is where we have people going to shop in Cookeville instead of here.”
The motion approved basically lets the developers know that the city is committed with the development.
“I think it would be appropriate for this council to go on record to continue the negotiations with the full intent of providing a reasonable incentive program for them, so that we might improve the retail growth in this community,” Vice Mayor J.H. Graham said.
The location that’s being eyed sits right off Interstate 40.
“It’s a good prospect and a good location,” Wood said. “It will pick off people outside of the county as well as people inside the county for shopping areas that are close by.”
NextSite has been working diligently to attract retail to Crossville by attending conferences in West Florida and North and South Carolina. They will soon be heading to the International Council of Shopping Centers RECon in mid May.
