Putnam County Board of Education secretary Sharon Reid and BOE attorney Dan Rader solved a mystery recently.
The two conducted an extensive search of titles and board of education minutes. They discovered a property near the Mt. Hermon church had already been sold back to the church.
Back in June, Pat Farris, a community member in Mt. Hermon, approached the board wanting to buy a piece of property the community believed the school board owned. Farris said the community believed the church owned it, but couldn’t find the title. The title they could find showed the church had sold the property to the board of education for $1 in 1949. Board minutes from 1957 showed the board sold the property back to the church that year.
Rader said the deed was transferred in an unusual way, leading to the confusion. Farris intends to purchase the land from the church.
