Remembering Joshua, Erin, and Sawyer Kimberlin

Joshua, Erin, and Sawyer Kimberlin fell victim to the Tuesday Tornado this week.

Eastside Church of Christ preacher Phillip Martin used to preach at Jere Whitson where Joshua used to attend. He said he met Joshua as a freshman in college.

“Josh came in as part of a group of young college kids that filled the space the congregation needed to take in its heart. They were young and enthusiastic, and Josh was just tremendously kind and generous. In time, as is normal for most college students, the scruffy freshman figured out how to comb his hair in the correct direction, and he and Erin started dating,” Martin said.

Martin recalled how nervous Joshua was when their relationship together got serious. He told Josh “you’re an idiot if you don’t marry that girl.” They married in 2014 and had their son Sawyer four years later.

Joshua and Erin loved to help others, Martin continued, and they would often babysit for other couples who had moved away from their family and would get homesick.

Martin remembered how Joshua would always want to put a smile on people’s faces.

“So Josh was an absolute prankster. He loved giving a laugh and doing things that would immensely make some folks embarrassed. Seeing him wearing a Yoda knit cap in the winter was totally normal for him. He loved Star Wars, loved science fiction. His family used to have foam sword fights at Thanksgiving.”

Erin was a former elementary school teacher in Algood and Joshua worked at ATC Automation.
