Mrs. Liza Cravens, age 82 of the Crawford Community, passed from this life on Friday morning, March 30, 2018 in the comfort of her home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
Mr. Carson Bryant, age 65 of the Boma community of Putnam County, died Thursday night, March 29th at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Arrangements for Mr. Bryant are incomplete.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ila Bertie Gooch Fisher, age 89 of Sparta, will be at 11:00 am Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the Spring Hill the Baptist Church with burial in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Ila passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the St. Thomas Highlands Hospital. She was born August 2, 1928 in White County to the late Bertie Everette and Effie May Cope Gooch. She was also preceded in death by her brother: William Gooch, Brother and sister-in-law: Fred and Simone Gooch, a sister: Rose Gooch and an infant brother and an infant sister. Mrs. Ila worked at the Sparta Shirt Factory then went to Red Cap where she worked for 34 years before retiring. She loved to quilt, do crafts, put puzzles together, work in her flower garden and canning. She is survived by her: Daughter & Son-in-law: Kathy and James Brymer of Sparta; Sister: Wilma (Harold) Cantrell of Walling; Brother: Freeman Gooch of Sparta; Sister-in-law: Mariam Gooch of Walling; Very Dear Friend: Nina Forsythe of Sparta; Her Dear Godchildren: R.J. Lee and Bronson Lee of Sparta; along with a host of nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews that was very special to her. The family will receive friends at Hunter Funeral Home Parlor from 4pm until 8pm on Friday evening. She will lie-in-state at the church from 9am until service time on Saturday.
Funeral services for Mr. John W. Vanhooser, 83, of Gainesboro, will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at Anderson – Upper Cumberland Funeral Home in Gainesboro. Burial will follow in the Rob Draper Memorial Cemetery in the Stone community of Jackson County. He passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at Bethesda Health Care Center in Cookeville. He was born August 30, 1934, in Jackson County, to the late Eugene “Buster” VanHooser and Elza Moss VanHooser. On February 27, 1990, he was married to June Vanhooser, who survives. He was a retired mail carrier, and a member of the Stone Church of Christ. He also served in the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 1 Sister: Jean Locke. Survivors include his Wife: June Vanhooser of Gainesboro; 2 Sons: Stanley (Karen) Vanhooser of Cookeville, and Steven Vanhooser of Madison, TN; 1 Step Son: Richie Meadows of Gainesboro; 1 Step Daughter: Marsha (James) Emerton of Gainesboro; 3 Grandchildren: Andrea Womack, B.J. Vanhooser, and Jackson Vanhooser; 4 Step Grandchildren: Latosha Meadows, Nolan Meadows, Jessica Emerton, and Ruby Randolph; 1 Brother-in-Law: Gilbert Locke of Michigan; and Special Cousin: John Edd (Faye) Willmore of Gainesboro. Several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends also survive. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 P.M. – 8 P.M., and Saturday from 10 A.M. until time of services.
A memorial service for Mr. Dwight Edward Luna, 68 of Sparta, will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Johnson Chapel Freewill Baptist Church with John Cunningham officiating. Mr. Dwight passed away on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at his residence. Born Sunday, August 28, 1949 in Smithville, he was the son of the late Reefus and Ressie Luna. Mr. Dwight loved hunting and model cars. Survivors include his wife, Maria Luna of Smithville; son, Brian Luna of Smithville; daughter, Heather Guy (Randy) of Sparta; brother, Larry Luna (Angela) of Smithville; sister, Bonnie Chacon (Marco) of Smithville; step-daughter, Ayde Ray; 2 grandchildren, Sierra Hendrien and Dakota Hendrien, and many friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Dwight Edward Luna.
Funeral Services for Mr. Morse “Moose” Benford Brown, 77 of Algood, will held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 31, 2018 from the chapel of Crest Lawn Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Heritage Cemetery in Algood, Tennessee. Morse passed from this life on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Morse was born Tuesday, March 25, 1941 in Olive Branch, Mississippi and he was the son of the late Charlie and Mariah (Adams) Brown. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at Crest Lawn Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Michael Shane Maples, 41 of Sparta, will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Oak Lawn Funeral Home with Steve Tiebout officiating. Burial will follow in Smith Chapel Cemetery with full Military Honors provided by the United States Army Honor Guard. Michael passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at his residence. Born Friday, July 16, 1976 in Frankfurt , Germany, he was the son of Gary Maples and Martha Jane Brock. He retired with 20 years of service in the Army National Guard. He served during Operation Iraqi Freedom from June 2004 until December 2005. Survivors include his wife, Amanda Lewis Maples of Sparta; sons, Stephen Weston Maples and Daniel Shane Maples of Sparta; daughter, Alexis Grace Kamryn Maples of Sparta; parents, Ron and Jane Bennett of Sparta and Gary and Frances Maples of Spencer; mother-in-law, Nancy Lewis of Smithville; brothers, Chip Bennett (Renee) of Cookeville and Jonathan Bennett (Kristina) of McMinnville; sister, Angie Maples of Spencer; several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Tad and Lucille Brock and brother, Gary Stephen Maples Jr. The family will welcome friends at 10:00 am until time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
A memorial service for Charles Ross Warren, 93 of Sparta, will be held on Saturday March 31st at 6 p.m. at Hickory Valley Baptist Church. Charles has returned to the Loving Father from whence he came. In his passing, he was surrounded by his loving family united by inexpressible love, admiration and gratitude. Charlie was born in Nashville in 1924 and spent his formative years deeply influenced by his family’s dedication to Grace Baptist Church led by Pastor L.S. Ewton. In 1942, Charlie married the beautiful Juanita Elliott known to her children and grandchildren as “Framma”. Immediately thereafter as a member of the Army Air Corps, he was assigned to the 8th Air Force 351st Bomb Group as ball turret gunner on a B-17. Charlie flew 36 missions and his decorations and military awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross. The Air Medal, and the French Legion of Honor. Upon his return to the States he graduated from Tennessee PolyTech. He joined IBM as Administration Manager where he earned many accolades and the admiration of his coworkers. After retiring from IBM in 1988, he devoted himself to his family, wood turning and Christian service, primarily to the Lakota Sioux of the Cheyenne River Reservation. His gift for making friends wherever he went and his ability as master story teller endeared him to all who met him. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Charles Ross Warren Sr. and Myrtle Webb Warren as well as his sisters Venorice Caudill, Lena Maddux, Elizabeth Maunsell, Marion Harvey, and his best friend John Whitehead. His beloved wife of 60 years was laid to rest in 2002. He is survived by his children Scott Warren, Kim Warren, her close friend Nicole Medeiros, and Chris Warren Hohn; his grandchildren Seth Warren, Sara Warren, Gabriel Warren, Elliott Warren, Katie McMillan, Amy Lock, Lindsey McMahan, Savannah Hohn, and great grandchildren Scarlett and Evan Lock, Jax McMahan, Luke Jacobsen, and Jack Warren Padgett, his dear friend John Sloan, and nephew Mark Maunsell. Charlie voiced frequently his love and deep appreciation to his son-in-law Dave Hohn for his countless hours of help with many tasks. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. with a remembrance service beginning at 6 p.m. featuring bagpipes and a military color guard. Food and fellowship will follow the memorial service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Hickory Valley Baptist Church of Sparta.
