Registration is underway for the Upper Cumberlands Senior Olympics.
Coordinator Alicia Arehart said the events are a great way for Seniors to stay in shape while remaining active and social.
“The objective of this special event is to recognize people who have achieved and maintained good health throughout their lives,” Arehart said. “To promote physical fitness, the pursuit of lifetime leisure activity, and to provide for fun, recreation, and fellowship.”
Arehart said this year’s Olympics will feature a wide variety of events such as basketball, bowling, cornhole, pickleball, shuffleboard, tennis, swimming, and many track and field events. She said the events are for all seniors 50 and up, and people of any level of experience are welcome to compete.
“You don’t have to have previous experience in any sport at all to be an athlete,” Arehart said. “So you just spark a new interest, and a lot of our people do that.”
Arehart said staying active at an older age and participating in events like the senior Olympics is beneficial for your overall health, not just physically, but socially as well. She said it is important for seniors to get out and meet people because their health can often go downhill in isolation
“When you isolate yourself you really are affecting your overall well-being,” Arehart said. “So when you push yourself to come into fellowship with other people and things like the senior Olympic events, you meet new friends, and it’s really a family.”
Registration for athletes across the Upper Cumberland is now open. Arehart said registrations to compete and to volunteer can be picked up at the Fair Park Senior Center, or online at Fairparkseniorcenter.org
