Putnam County Register of Deeds John Sanders is working on updates to the department.
Sanders said his number one priority is to modernize the department’s facilities and equipment.
Sanders said the biggest equipment upgrade is new software called an Optical Character Recognition reader. He said the software scans documents to check for human error and search for index words to help better match documents and eliminate discrepancies. Sanders said he plans to use the software to fix past documents as well.
“With this OCR reader what we plan to do in the near future is to use the same software to start going backward and check for any discrepancies,” Sanders said. “It will spot those discrepancies in past deeds, we can go all the way back to the beginning to 1854 and correct those with this software.”
Sanders said they also worked to do some upgrades to the building to improve workflow.
“Like all buildings after some years, they need some updates,” Sanders said. “And so the Putnam County Maintenence Department came in and did a lot of work inside the offices painting and upgrading.”
Sanders said he will also be sending his employees to technical assistance classes for administrative professionals. He said this is to help improve customer service.
“I am a big believer in training, I think that trained employees make good employees,” Sanders said. “I think that serves our county well, serves our customers well that come in our office.”
Sanders said he will continue to talk to other registers in similar-sized counties to see what has worked for them and what can be done to keep updating the department.
