Putnam Solid Waste Hoping To Expand Transfer Station

Putnam County’s transfer station looking to expand to accommodate growth in the county.

Solid Waste Director Doug Ashburn said the proposed expansion will double the floor size of the South Jefferson Avenue location. He said that adds up to about 15,000 square feet for the tipping floor.

“We are going to have to have some remodification of our current building and then we’ll add an addition to it as well as some dirt work for the road around our building,” Ashburn said. “We’re hoping it will make the wait times not as long.”

Ashburn said adding a 10th convenience center a few years ago also helped facilitate the waste process. However, as the county continues to grow so does the need for the transfer station’s expansion. He said the waste from all over the county and the four cities are deposited at the station before transferring to Middle Point Landfill in Murfreesboro.

Ashburn said it is a big ask for the county commission, but the expansion is due. He said he will present the need to the county commission which will vote on to see if they can move forward with the project.
