The Putnam County School System will use testing results to help target students for its Summer Learning and Bridge Camps.
Director of Schools Corby King said that there has not been clear guidance from the state on Summer Camp expectations. However, King said the system knows it needs to address learning gaps caused by last school year’s closure and absences from this school year.
“We’ll identify students who are below grade level, who are behind and target those specifically,” King said. “And invite them and encourage them to come to summer school. It will be a very intense, very focused time this summer. It’s not just going to be a fun camp, it will be fun but it’s not just an all fun, play camp.”
King said that state has mandated two hours of math, two hours of ELA and one hour of focused intervention. King said the Summer Camps are open to all students entering grades 1-8.
“We have learning gaps, we do have some learning loss from where we closed last year and from some of the absences from the schools this year,” King said. “We will be targeting students.”
Putnam’s Summer Camps are June 1 to June 28. The Learning Camp is for students entering grades 1-5, the Bridge Camp is for 6-8.
