Putnam Schools Change To LED Lights

The Putnam County Schools will make the switch to LED lights at all its school facilities before the new school term begins.

County Commissioners approved a $2.5 million loan for the project Monday night. The project will replace lights inside and out with the exception of field lighting.

“It’s usage, that’s where you save the bulk of your funds,” Putnam County Superintendent Jerry Boyd said. “We’ll apply the savings over the next few years to pay off the loan.”

The loan is a six-year term, but Boyd said school officials believe they can retire it sooner, saving interest.

Boyd said the decreased maintenance and replacement costs will be additional money that has not been factored in the equation.

The two newest schools already have LED technology installed. Boyd said the facilities should be upgraded by June 15.
