Putnam Property Tax Notices Coming, Payments Can Start Earlier

Property tax notices are around the corner and Putnam County residents can start making payments before they get notified by mail.

Trustee Freddie Nelson said payments can start on Monday, mailed notices are expected to arrive mid-October. Nelson said residents do not have to pay all at once, but should not drag out their payment plan.

“As long as they’re paid by the last day in February,” Nelson said. “Otherwise they’ll incur interest after that date and it’s like they didn’t pay any of it at all.”

Nelson said payments can be broken up into no more than five payments. Nelson said owed property taxes will take on 1.5 percent interest each additional month that is not paid.

“Check on tax relief for the elderly and disabled,” Nelson said. “The income limit is $31,190 or less for a combined income for a home. If they do, they can get $150 from the county off and they get $180 from the state.”

He said if residents have bought property recently and do not get a notice, they need to call the trustee’s office to begin the process. Nelson said that payments can be made in-person and online.
