Putnam Man Loses Aggravated Assault Appeal

The Tennessee Criminal Court of Appeals has upheld the 2016 aggravated assault conviction of a Putnam County man.

55-year-old Thomas Clinton Wood appealed the conviction after being ordered to serve three years confinement as a range one offender. Wood received the charge after stabbing a man during a party on Quinland Lake Road in April 2016.

Wood contended that evidence against him was insufficient to support his conviction and that the trial court erred by denying alternative sentencing.

The court of appeals affirmed the judgment of the trial court, noting that Wood had one prior felony conviction for selling a controlled substance and three convictions for DUI.  Wood also previously violated a probationary sentence.

The court of appeals said Wood’s prior record supported the trial court’s denial of alternative sentencing.

The state also said evidence was sufficient for the jury to find Wood guilty of aggravated assault.

According to the state’s felony offender database, Wood is being held at the Trousdale Turner Correctional Center. He’s scheduled to appear before a Board of Probation and Parole Hearing Officer on February 26th, 2019.
