Putnam Library Celebrates Banned Books Week

The Putnam County Library will celebrate Banned Books Week with reading.

Interim Librarian Phil Schaller:

“Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read, it’s typically held during the last week in September, and it highlights the value of free and open access to information,” Schaller said.

The American Library Association tracks challenges it receives each year. Folks challenge books for a variety of reasons, from drug use to religious overtones. Reading any book has value, Schaller said.

“Well we are letting people read them, essentially, we have a ton of them here in the library,” Schaller said.

Each year, a range of books are challenged, from the Harry Potter series to the Holy Bible.
