Putnam County will celebrate Veterans Day Saturday with the county’s annual Veterans Ceremony and Parade.
Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter said the county moved the parade because many veterans would not be able to attend Monday due to work schedules. Porter said the parade is one of the best ways to honor the veterans in Putnam County.
“I’ve always said once I got elected Mayor back in 2014 that I was going to try to make sure we did everything we could to honor our veterans,” Porter said. “Those folks go and serve and risk their life to fight for our freedoms and I think the least we can do is make sure that we honor and thank them every chance we get.”
Before the parade, there will be a special ceremony honoring two local World War II Veterans Ross Williams and Roy Shores. Porter said veterans are some of the best people in the community.
“These folks once they served in the military they come back and they are some of the most respectful people that you ever want to be around,” Porter said. “They play a big part in our community when it comes to jobs and services that they provide and leadership, and we are just thankful in our community to have such great men and women that we have.”
Porter said he hopes the community will understand the appreciation Putnam County has for Veterans after the parade.
“We love our Veterans and that we want to make sure that we honor and respect them,” Porter said. “We are very thankful for the service they provided to our country.”
Porter said celebrating Veterans and Veterans Day is special to him as his dad was in the Army during the Vietnam War. Porter said Senator Paul Bailey will sing God Bless America as well during the ceremony.
The ceremony will begin at 10:30am on East Broad Street in front of the Putnam County courthouse. The parade will begin at 11am following the ceremony. The parade route will go from the courthouse to Cookeville Depot.
