At least eight people have died after multiple tornadoes touched down in Putnam County early Tuesday morning.
EMA Director Tyler Smith said crews are continuing to conduct rescue operations in the western portion of the county.
“We are asking the public to stay away from the area,” Smith said. “There are utility crews out trying to get power restored to the area. This will probably be a several day event in trying to get this cleaned up.”
The twisters touched down near Highway 70 between the city limits of Baxter and Cookeville. The hardest hit areas appear to be Charleton Square, Plunk Whitson, Echo Valley, Prosperity Point, N. Mcbroom Chapel, and Double Springs Utility District.
Smith said Cookeville Mayor Ricky Shelton and Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter will take part in a helicopter fly over to survey the damage. Emergency officials have scheduled an 11 a.m. press conference to provide additional information.
