Putnam County kindergarten registration begins Tuesday.
K-5 Supervisor Jill Ramsey said parents should bring their children to the school they are zoned for.
“This is a day of orientation, when children have an opportunity with their parents to have that first exposure of school,” Ramsey said. “It makes them feel safe and secure and also helps start that first school experience off right.”
Tuesday’s registration will be for children 5-years-old on or before August 15th of this year.
During registration, Ramsey said families will learn about district policies, school transportation, and extended childcare opportunities.
Children do not have to attend kindergarten at the age of 5, but all children must attend Kindergarten before they go to first grade.
Ramsey said many parents do choose to hold out of Kindergarten if their child has experienced an extended illness or not attended a pre-k.
“Sometimes they choose to keep them at home for an additional year just to mature,” Ramsey said. “There’s different reasons that we honor and respect, but they will have to attend kindergarten before they can go to first grade.”
Typically, the school system has about 800-850 kindergartners come into the school system each year, Ramsey said.
Parents are asked to bring a birth certificate, social security card, two proofs of address, and immunization records.
Registration takes place at all county elementary schools from 1 PM until 5 PM.
