The Putnam County Board of Health encouraged residents to be vigilant as the COVID-19 outbreak continues.
“I am so proud of the way this community responded to the victims of the major disaster that just occurred,” Board Chair Clarence Smith said. “I know we will respond to this pandemic in the same way.”
Smith said only a total community response will slow the virus spread.
The board met in special session Wednesday getting the latest information for state and federal health officials. The board urged citizens who are concerned about their symptoms to call their health provider before going to a medical office or hospital.
Among the other recommendations of the board: If you are sick or have a fever, stay home. Cover your cough or sneezes and throw used tissues away immediately after use. Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands and clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects. Practice social distancing by remaining 4 to 6 feet apart from others. Citizens should limit interactions in crowded areas, avoiding large gatherings or groups consisting of 10 or more people.
“These guidelines recommended by the Center for Disease Control are of the utmost importance in limiting the effects of COVID-19,” Smith said. “Even though some of these things hurt us for the moment, what we sacrifice now will hopefully keep us from seeing the problems that have occurred in other countries.”
