Putnam Co. Tree Giveaway Saturday For Tornado Victims

Putnam County officials will be giving away 1,000 trees Saturday at the county fairgrounds for tornado victims.

Parks and Recreation Director John Ross Albertson said the event is made possible through a local tree nursery.

“We were actually contacted by David Ervin of Ervin and Son Nursery, and he has 1,000 arborvitaes that he wants to be able to give way to tornado victims,” Albertson said. “So of course, we saw it as a great opportunity, and a way that we can help by utilizing our facilities and our staff to help and get those out.”

From 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., people can enter the west entrance and head to the music barn where drop offs will occur. Albertson said the goal is to beautify the area along highway 70.

“If you have been up and done 70 since the tornado, you notice of all the trees that have been damaged,” Albertson said. “And, not just that, but even trees that our in people’s yards where their houses were gone, of course the trees were destroyed, as well. So this is a perfect opportunity.”

Albertson said people will be asked to remain in their vehicles while county workers load the trees.

“That would actually be very beneficial,” Albertson said. “Of course with COVID and everything, all of our staff will be wearing masks. We will help load those.”
