Putnam BOE To Sell Property To Church

The Putnam County Board of Education began the process to sell a small plot of land at its meeting Thursday.

Pat Farris of the Mt. Hermon community addressed the board. The BOE owns a one-acre plot of land bordering the Mt. Hermon Church property.

“It’s been the community’s belief that the property has been transferred, of course there’s no deed registered, but it’s been      acknowledged amongst the community that the church purchased the property for $5,800 back in the 1960s,” Farris said.

Director of Schools Jerry Boyd said the BOE purchased the property from the church for $1 back in 1949. The deed says if the board decides to sell it, the church gets first option to buy. But the church stopped holding services in 2016, Farris said. Only two members remain, both are in their 90s. The church board maintains the property, she said.

The board unanimously voted to declare the property surplus and empowered Boyd to begin the process to sell the land to the church board.
