Putnam Animal Shelter Wants to Update Software

The Cookeville-Putnam County Animal Shelter wants new software to take better care of their animals and the community.

Shelter Director Jennifer Tracy said the software the shelter is asking for expands the capabilities of day-to-day operations, as well as aids in efficiency.

“It’s really the Cadillac of shelter software, quite honestly,” Tracy said. “I used it at my last shelter and I’m very familiar with it and what it’s capable of. Really the nice thing about it too is that the people who developed the software–they all come from an animal sheltering or animal control background.”

Tracy said the software would allow them to save time when entering animal and client information, help with animal medical care, and eventually help with research in tracking the patterns of stray animals.

Tracy said they hope to also add a pet finder feature, which would allow community members to post lost and found animals that can match with the shelter’s stray database and contact owners when an animal is found.

“There’s also some features promoting the animals as far as promoting the animals that we can put into place,” Tracy said. “This website that’s attached to the software, because it’s linked directly to it, it updates very quickly so there’s no delay as soon as an animal is marked as available for adoption it’s going to go up on this website.”

Tracy said the software is necessary to combat technical issues the shelter has been facing. Tracy said their current software often glitches or doesn’t save, and the new software called “Chameleon” will help make the necessary strides to improve the shelter and its contributions to the Putnam County community.
