Puppy Yoga Sessions Being Held At Cane Creek Park

Cane Creek Park set to host a second session of Puppy Love Yoga at the
Putnam County Animal Shelter after the first session sold out in under 24 hours.

Special Programs Coordinator Jen Webb said the idea stemmed from a yoga class held at the park several years ago with kittens. She said partnering with the Putnam County Animal Shelter is the perfect opportunity to support another city department and help residents get active.

“It’s great for the adoptables at the shelter because they get attention,” Webb said. “It brings some attention to yoga for people who are just animal lovers, and then both puppies and yoga are so good for mental health and emotional health.”

Webb said the class costs $3 and participants are encouraged to bring items to donate to the shelter. She said the class runs from noon to 1:00pm on Saturday. You can register on the city of Cookeville’s website or the Cane Creek Park Facebook page.

“It brings a lot of participants to the shelter who might not otherwise have ever been there or know about what the shelter’s doing,” Webb said. “They are able to see all of the animals that are up for adoption, and maybe if someone already has all of the animals that they need, it’s a great opportunity to make a donation.”

Items that the shelter needs the most right now include dog and cat food, paper towels, and trash bags. Webb said Cookeville Leisure Services relishes any opportunity to work in conjunction with other city departments, so this partnership made perfect sense. She said besides physical exercise and a good time, the sessions supply a much-needed boost to mental health after a long, cold winter.

“As the days are getting a little longer, the temperature is coming up,” Webb said. “People are ready to kind of come out of their winter hibernation and start getting more active and getting outside, so this is a great springtime activity.”

She said attendees will need to wear comfortable clothes and bring their own yoga mat, but it is a beginner class, so no prior yoga experience is required.
