Property Appraisal Appeals In Jackson Co. Begins

Several Jackson County residents participated in the start of week-long Board of Equalization meetings Monday.

The five-member board hear pleas of property owners that feel their property value was unfairly adjusted. Mayor Randy Heady said it is a reappraisal year for the county and property values have rose.

“In some cases, they went up 70 percent or more, but county wide the average was a 30 percent increase,” Heady said. “That’s enough to get you excited, but when you begin to do you homework, you’ll find out the property values have went up that much.”

Heady said he expected more of turnout based on initial reactions of residents. Heady said the board even had a few no shows for scheduled meetings as residents learned more about the increase.

“In the beginning, I thought it would have been 100 people,” Heady said. “But, there hasn’t been that many to sign up, but with that being said, we have had several. This morning, we had about two or three that were scheduled not show up, so again, I believe people have done their homework and said property value is actually that high.”

Heady said people moving in from other states and counties contributed to the property value increase. While property values have increased, Heady said he foresees county taxes staying steady.

Any property owner can request a meeting with the board by contacting the county property assessor. Property reappraisals are conducted in Jackson County every five years.
