Prepare Winter Weather Kits For Protection

With winter weather chances increasing, Upper Cumberland residents need to prepare Cold Weather Emergency Kits for the home and car.

Fentress County EMS Director Daniel Coleman said the sense of security the kits provide is much needed. He said the kits should include essential items such as first aid supplies, warm blankets, and enough rations to sustain each household member for up to three days.

“Winter weather is something that can hit very fast and quick,” Coleman said. “Whether it be snow shed that will impact your travel or whether it be um the cold that impacts your home, it’s very important to be prepared.”

Coleman said that having an emergency kit makes all the difference, as individuals are equipped with essential supplies to handle unexpected situations. Coleman also said with essential items like first aid supplies, food, water, and tools, an emergency kit will help people stay both safe and comfortable while waiting for professional help to arrive.

Coleman said you can follow a guide for emergency preparedness, which includes assembling an emergency kit, prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“It is best if you have a cell phone charger, a first aid kit, some jumper cables. Make sure you have good tires, have some water and snacks in there,” Coleman said. “Make sure your gas is full, you have a flashlight, make sure you have some blankets, some boots, mittens, some warm clothes, and an ice scraper. A tow rope would be handy as well.”

Coleman said that if you still have an emergency kit from last year, checking all of its contents to ensure they are in working order is crucial. Coleman said over time, items such as batteries, medical supplies, and food may expire or become damaged, so regular checks will ensure the kit remains fully prepared to meet your needs. Coleman said keeping the kit up to date is essential for safety and peace of mind.

“Always have your kit on hand, know where it’s at, and make sure everything works before the emergency encounters,” Coleman said. “Stay safe if it’s snowing and please be cautious if you have to drive.”
