Jackson County American Legion Post 129 will host a flag retirement on July 4th.
The flag code established in 1923 states that “the flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing.” Agitant for Post 129 Everette Vanhooser said that means the flag must be handled properly.
“Well the flag is a symbol of our nation,” Vanhooser said. “And the flag retirement, what we do there, flags that are worn and tattered that we dispose of them in a way that is very respectful.”
Old flags will be burned in a burn barrel and will be disposed honorably. Local boy and girls scouts will be in attendance. Vanhooser said the flag retirement will teach the younger generation the importance of the nations flag.
“It lets the young ones coming in especially the scouts, it lets them understand how important our flag is,” Vanhooser said. “What the symbolism is of freedom. People have given their lives to keep that flag flying for many years through many wars.”
The ceremony will feature speakers talking about the United States flag. Vanhooser said the retirement will also show veterans in the community that they are appreciated. The retirement will be at the Gainesboro Town Square at 11:00am Thursday.
