The Poke Sallet Foundation hosting a community meeting Thursday to recruit volunteers for its first event since taking over.
Board Member Casey Jackson said the session will cover volunteer assignments as well as general community needs to host a successful Poke Sallet Festival.
“We are looking for volunteers that maybe helped in the past with specific competitions such as the outside race, beauty pageant and we’re also looking for new volunteers,” Jackson said.
The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at 200 South Main Street in Gainesboro. The experience will be needed as the event moves to the Jackson County Fairgrounds this year. It has historically been held at the Gainesboro downtown square. Jackson said the festival is scheduled for May 12th-13th.
“We were getting feedback from previous vendors and the carnival that used to come to the festival that the square was no longer a good place to set up,” Jackson said. ” Many of our vendors were unhappy setting up on a slope. We also like the fact that the fairgrounds are getting an upgrade.”
The foundation took over the event last year from the American Legion Post 129. Jackson said the group plans to continue the same activities to keep the tradition alive.
