Pickett Schools Fill Math Teacher, Bus Driver

Pickett County Schools have found a new math teacher and bus driver to fill the biggest gaps in the district’s staff.

The district has been searching for a math teacher ever since one walked out and never returned over a month ago. Director of Schools Diane Elder said the district has hired Pickett County native Molly Maxwell to teach at the high school.

“She is looking forward to coming back home and teaching in her home school,” Elder said. “I think she will be an asset to our math department and I’m looking forward to having some stability in there.”

Elder said Maxwell begins this week and already has experience from teaching in Overton County.

The district has also been short one full-time bus driver from the start of the school year until now. Elder said the driver started recently and is doing well in the new role. Elder said there were some delays in the training process before the driver could start, but those issues have been resolved.

“So far, so good,” Elder said. “Had our little bumps in the road but we’ve got those corrected.”

Elder said she is talking with a potential candidate to find a substitute teacher who would replace a teacher that is retiring at the beginning of the year.
