Pickett Historic Rehab Nearing Completion

Work nearing completion on the historic log cabin outside the Byrdstown-Pickett County Chamber of Commerce.

Executive Director Bill Robbins said the man working on the cabin has several other projects delaying him. Robbins said they have completely remade the cabin from the ground up with as many original materials as possible.

“We took it down to the ground and come right back up with it in its original configuration,” Robbins said. “A single room, two-level. When we took it down it was a, had added a kitchen on the backside which was just board and planks. It wasn’t the logs, so we did away with that.”

Robbins said the cabin is the second part of a three-phase project that will lead into the construction a living history village. He said the cabin will serve as a free historical museum that they hope will draw more visitors to the county.

“We have a lot of people ask about it,” Robbins said. “You know, it’s right next to (Highway) 111 and everybody sees it likes to, most people like the thought of looking at an old-time cabin.”

Robbins said they have a lot of historical items in the welcome center that could be featured in the cabin as well.

“It’s important for the history of the area,” Robbins said. “And to think about it, who would have thought here that cabin was built in 1831 on the site its on right now.”

Robbins said the cabin has ended up costing much more than they expected because they had to change who they were using after complications with the work.

“He said it’d take him a good three or four more full days if he could finish it,” Robbins said. “It’s just a matter of him getting here. He came up and worked a little bit last week for about a couple hours.”
