The Pickett County School will hold graduation in the High School gym.
Director Diane Elder said the board is wanting to do their best to make the ceremony as traditional as possible.
“We did receive the approval from the health department and from our county mayor, so we have everything lined up and approved and ready to go on that,” Elder said. “It’s a limited number of people that will be allowed to attend.”
Six guests per senior will be allowed to attend. Elder said no more than 300 will be allowed in the 1,200 space gymnasium. Families in the stands and seniors on the floor will sit six feet apart from each other.
Elder said it was a difficult decision to cancel prom this year.
“One reason why we’ve chosen not to do it and go ahead with our graduation on the date it is, we are afraid that come June or July, if we do move the date out, that things might be worse then. Pickett County is one of the two counties in the state of Tennessee that doesn’t have a [COVID-19] case,” Elder said.
Graduation is May 15 and the last day of school is May 22. Elder said it’s possible the next school year could be online, but nothing is certain. She said the board continues to discuss summer programming.
