Pickett Co. Clears Major Hurdle For New Jail Facility

Pickett County cleared one of the last major hurdles for constructing a new jail Monday night.

The county commission approved plans for a 54 bed jail facility to be built.

“We are now ready to proceed with the engineering of the jail and the particulars that go into that,” County Executive Richard Daniel said. “We are looking at maybe bidding this in October and awarding bids in October.”

Daniel said the commission also approved a resolution to finance the facility through a lease to own option.  Daniel said construction could possibly start before the new year.

The jail will be located on West Main Street in Byrdstown about a half mile from downtown.
