PCSS Working To Prevent Students From Falling Behind Over Breaks

Putnam County Schools are working to ensure high school students in the 21st-century program don’t fall behind over spring break.

Extended Learning Program Coordinator Brenda Hughett said the federally-funded program helps the bottom 25 percent of students who are economically disadvantaged.  She said that the spring break intercession days help those students who are failing or at risk of failing.

“They’re coming in and in smaller numbers and we have a list of exactly what needs to be made up or tests that need to be made up,” Hughett said. “And once you do that grades start pulling up pretty quickly.”

Hughett said that guidance counselors at the high schools will pull reports to tell them who is failing and in what. She said that site coordinators will then work to reach out to teachers to see what it is that needs to be done.

Hughett said that they host this type of intercession every nine weeks throughout the year. She said they’ve had as many as 100 students show up, and that once they start making what they need to do, the numbers will decrease some.

“The end-all, be-all goal would be for them not to be failing for those nine weeks,” Hughett said.

Hughett said that this intercession program is not necessarily a sign-up program, but that parents can reach out to site coordinators if they have concerns. However, she said that they respectfully ask that these students already be enrolled in 21st Century.
