PCSS Creating New Transfer Window For Grades K-3

The Putnam County School System will soon offer a new transfer request window for currently enrolled K-3 students.

A new state law goes into effect for the fall semester that requires school districts to offer students transfer options to schools outside the zone they reside. Attendance Supervisor Chris Pierce said the window will open in May after the early enrollment period.

“We will post the available number of seats for transfer requests per eligible school and grade on our district website once that number is developed,” Pierce said. “All this is pending compliance with building capacities and student teacher ratios.”

Pierce said he does not anticipate a large number of seats to be available. Pierce said a lottery type drawing will occur if the number of transfers outnumber the available seats.

“We also have to maintain room for growth, and the schools in Putnam County have potential for a large growth rate in the next few years,” Pierce said. “We have to maintain room in classrooms for students that live in a specific zone.”

Pierce said the school system the past several years has offered open enrollment for the middle schools and high schools. Pierce said the state law made the system extend the option to younger grade levels.

“All this does is give families a little bit more school choice as far as the education of their student,” Pierce said.

Pierce said he anticipates more information about the process to come from the school in about two weeks.
