A new tutoring program could be on the way for Putnam Schools through a partnership with Tennessee Tech.
Federal Programs Supervisor Bridgett Carwile said the district looks to work with education students to do tutoring within the school day.
“We have sat down with Tennessee Tech a couple of times,” Carwile said. “We’re still in that where are we. They start school in a couple of weeks, so it was too much to push right now when they started. So, we’re looking at some time line October, November. Pushing somethings out to their students to see who may be interested.”
Carwile said the school system wants to start small at one or two schools. Carwile said an expansion could be considered depending on the number of students in need.
“See how many students are needing some tutoring based on some of the data we are getting back now and based on some of the data we will get this fall and kind of just go from there,” Carwile said.
Carwile said the tutoring program has not been made official. Carwile said it is a part of the ESSER 3.0 spending plan which needs state approval before being implemented.
“Maybe starting in January,” Carwile said. “This is all new. The state is kind of giving us some guidance on what they are wanting to see.”
Carwile said Tech students that participate would have to go through training before being allowed to tutor.
