If you have overdue property taxes, interest rates will increase up to five percent each month.
Overton County Trustee Peggy Smith said there’s less than 2% who hasn’t paid yet on the Overton tax books.
“We’re still getting a lot of phone calls, we have a lot of people calling,” Smith said. “A lot of people has been great, they’ve been very understanding. They just want to get their taxes paid. They’ve been mailing it into us or they’ve been mailing it over the phone or going online themselves and paying.”
Residents received deadline notifications October 1 and the last day to pay without interest was February 29. Smith said there’s a 5% interest increase in March, and a 3% increase in April.
Smith said it’s important to pay your property taxes for the good of the community.
“That’s what, our little rural counties, that’s what we operate on,” Smith said. That’s what makes our…sheriffs departments run. Our collection is really good, we had a big pay in February and we don’t have that much left on the books.”
