Interviews underway to find a new Veterans Service Officer for Overton County.
County Executive Steven Barlow said the county continues to accept applications for the position. The officer serves in each county as an advocate for vets and their families.
“All the veterans in Overton County, they deserve to have somebody they can go to to help them with their affairs, to get them with their benefits, to help them,” Barlow said. “If you’ve ever had to deal with the va, sometimes it’s hard to get through to do all that thing. A veteran service officer can help you go through the VA system and help you get set up with appointments and things in that nature as well.”
Overton County recently made its officer a full-time position in an effort to help more veterans. Barlow said the service is one of the most important ones the county provides.
“We’re wanting to find that perfect VSO officer to be able to take care of our veterans,” Barlow said.
Many veterans services officer report that veterans often do not want to ask for assistance. Barlow said the services available have been earned by those who have served.
“Being a veteran, helping other veterans, you know, what they’re going through, you know, the pain that they’re in, you know, they offer counseling as well,” Barlow said. “Somebody is dealing with some issues. They offer counseling as well. So to. To find that perfect person that can fit in there, it could be hard or strenuous, but they’re out there. It’s just somebody that’s called to do it with a heart of gold that wants to help their fellow veterans.”
