Overton County Commission has sent a letter of fiscal strength to the state.
County Executive Ben Danner said that the letter states the county has healthy finances and is able to pass a balanced budget. He said it will allow the county to apply for the state’s Three-Star grant program.
“With the money from the Three-Star, we try to use it in creative ways to try to get programs going to help the schools and different departments,” Danner said. “So that’s a good grant, and it’s no match so that really helps.”
Previous Three-Star grants were used to do a new county website and for the chamber to do signage for downtown. Danner said that letter is something they submit every year, and with one of the highest available bond rates the county should be successful in receiving the grant.
Danner said that the Three-Star program doesn’t like to award grants to counties that can’t prove their fiscal responsibility. He said by having the letter, it shows the county is in fact responsible.
“And that means a lot for the taxpayers because we’re not trying to overspend we’re trying to be as conservative as we can with the money that we have,” Danner said.
