Overton Sheriff: Motorists Have Time To Pick Up Stranded Vehicles

If you had to leave your vehicle on the side of the road due to weather, make sure the you are not creating a traffic hazard.

Overton County Sheriff John Garrett said during inclement weather, his office will not tow vehicles as long it is in a safe spot.

“If weather conditions are bad and if you feel like the safest thing you can do is to leave your vehicle somewhere, we are not going to put a time limit on it,” Garrett said.”It’s got to be conditions improved enough for the vehicle to move.”

Garrett said if you do leave a vehicle unattended, call your local dispatch providing the tag number. Garrett recommended the same practice for state highways and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

“Here is who I am. This is my vehicle. Here is the description and tag number. I’m leaving it here due to the fact I can’t travel any further,” Garrett said. “Let them know that you are willingly leaving it there and that you’re okay.”

Garrett said motorist should also do anything to make the vehicle more visible such as cones. Garrett said even placing a note on the vehicle can help.
