Overton School Board Revisiting Conversations About Updating Coaches Pay

Overton County School Board revisiting updates to the school system’s coaching supplement schedule.

The board discussed the subject during a work session Tuesday night. Chair Mike Hayes said it was time to revisit the discussions that had originally started in January.

“For our counties versus surrounding counties and we were quite well underneath where other counties were so we started relooking at that,” Hayes said. “And in the past, we had pay supplements for a teaching coach and non-teaching coach where we decided to take the non-teaching off because a coach is a coach to make that equivalent across the board.”

Hayes said they hope to collect more information from Livingston Academy Principal Richard Melton and Athletic Director Lesley Riddle. He said they are probably 90 percent complete of where they want to be.

Hayes said right now they are looking to make pay equitable and comparable as look at different sports or clubs. For example, Hayes said on the football team there are 60 athletes and four coaches, but a basketball team might have 15 players and two coaches.

“So we’re trying to make that equivalent for pay versus for responsibility of the number of kids plus how much time is involved and how long their schedule is,” Hayes said. “(…)There’s a couple of sports like baseball, soccer for instance have a fall and spring season so they would have double the time whereas other sports will have one season and it’s over. So we got to make sure they’re comparable as far as the time they’re spending with that sport.”

Hayes said they will ideally put in a new salary schedule for coach pay at the board’s July meeting.

In other business, the school board also approved moving forward with repairs to the stairs at Rickman Elementary School. Hayes said the cost to repair the stairs would have been $6,500 if in-house maintenance crews performed the work, but will cost $9,000 if a contracted group does it. He said the $9,000 would also include a warranty.
