The Overton Board of Education adopted an all-new code of conduct for families, volunteers, and visitors Tuesday night.
Director of Schools Donnie Holman said the change came about due to a new policy from the Tennessee School Boards Association. Holman said they do not have many problems with unruliness but the new code will serve as a guideline in case an issue arises.
“I’ll say this, it’s just all very, very basic common sense stuff is the way I look at it,” Holman said. “I’ve read it. It’s nine pages long, but it’s very common sense good behavior that we’ve all known all of our lives pretty much.”
Holman said the code was designed with help from the board’s attorney to ensure it follows state standards. Holman said copies of the new rules will be available at each school along with QR codes linking to the rules online that can be scanned with a smartphone.
“It’ll also be on the county school system website and the school website,” Holman said.
The district already had a code of conduct for teachers and students, but did not have one in place for visitors.
“I hope that it’ll help us if the situation ever arises, but it may not have a very noticeable impact,” Holman said.
In other business, the board approved a bid for some $130,000 to purchase two seventy-eight passenger buses. The board also honored members Wayne Taylor and Jarman Hicks for their time on the board. Tuesday was their last meeting.
