Overton Library Board To Begin Interviews For Director Next Month

The Overton County Library Board has eight applicants interested in the library director position.

Chairman Jimmy Thompson said a subcommittee of the board will gather on January 4th to review resumes.

“A lot of the library things are done on a computer. It’s not just books anymore,” Thompson said. “The library director also has to be good with people and know how to fill the positions under them in their staff. It’s complicated. It’s more than just being a librarian really.”

Thompson said the full library board will then consider recommendations and vote on who will serve as director. Thompson said he would like to have the position filled by the end of January.

“The subcommittee will look over the education, job descriptions and just more or less get familiarized with what they put in their resume,” Thompson said. “Then, we will set another time later on that the whole committee board will get together, discuss and interview.”

Former Director Cynthia Julian-Simmons left the position for a job with the Putnam County Library System. Thompson said the director search will be his first over the three years he has served on the board.

“What we did was we put adds out in the paper in Overton County and put it on the library website,” Thompson said. “We have Rita Underhill, she worked for the city planning for years, and she put it on all the websites she could think of. The cut off date was December the 10th.”
