Expect road conditions to worsen as darkness overtakes the region and temperatures drop.
Overton County Highway Department Director James Norrod said when the temperature gets into the teens, salt does little to help clear the roads. He said the highway department will continue to do what they can utilizing salt and a snow plow.
“We had our bins full,” Norrod said. “That’s all we can do. We’ve had the plows and our salt spreaders out all night. Hopefully the salt will help some, and we’ll start seeing some effects of it.”
He said the department will salt hills and busy roads and also utilize a snowplow. He said the best course of action will be to stay off the roads if possible.
Norrod said there is never enough salt to cover the entire county.
“We’ve got 650 miles, so we have to be selective on what roads we salt, and we usually try to salt some hills and troubled spots and then plow what we can,” Norrod said.
With temperatures not expected to warm until Thursday, Norrod said patience will be the biggest key.
“Everyone just needs to stay home if they can,” Norrod said. “This will be over in a few days.”
