Overton County’s June sales tax numbers jumped 7 percent from last year.
County Executive Ben Danner said last month was the biggest month the county has seen in at least six years.
“We’re $120,000 ahead of what we were at the same time, and last year was our biggest year ever,” Danner said. “That’s the thing about the sales tax…everything in the county usually goes up and expenses go up, but the more sales tax we get that keeps the taxes low for the property tax owners.”
Danner believes Overton County has weathered through the pandemic very well. He attributes the county having some of the lowest property taxes and increased sales in building material. Increased internet tax numbers have also been a help.
The county is 15 percent above last year to date. Danner said last year the county was up 40 percent from the year before.
“We had one month in April that was about $400 below last year’s number, but every month other than that has been the biggest month we’ve ever had,” Danner said.
Although this has been the worst year for the state and country, it has been one of the best years for the county’s budget, Danner said.
