Overton Commission Applying For Industrial Site Development Grant

Overton County moving forward with an application to the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development for site development grant dollars.

The commission approved the application at its meeting Monday night. Commission Chair Darwin Clark said the funds will be put towards helping the county increase its availability of land suitable for industrial development.

“So we can go to other areas in the county like other farms like we had before,” Clark said. “And if they mark it as feasible or a good location for us to have an investment in that land then we would look at entertaining them to the do all the soil work, the prep work, check to see if it’s got wetlands and so forth.”

Clark said the county can apply for up to $5,000,000 with a 10 percent local match. He said it will be up to the state to determine a timeline for the process.

Clark said the next steps will be to submit this information with all of the locations the county has identified that might be interested in this kind of development.

“And then they would come out and look at those places and see if it’s feasible,” Clark said. “And if it’s feasible we’ll start the process of going to look at soil samples, if it’s wetland, if it perks for a sewer, water, will all be at that time.”
