Overton County set to double its solid waste tipping fee from $50 to $100.
County Executive Steven Barlow said the need comes from rising costs for hauling fees. He said Overton County hauls its waste to a location in Oneida.
“Since we shut our own county dump down back 30 years ago we have to rely on other sources to take our garbage off to,” Barlow said. “As it continues to go up and up and up we weren’t charging enough and we were actually losing money.”
Barlow said this tipping fee goes into effect only for commercial dumping. He said residential waste will remain free.
Barlow said the new tipping fee will be implemented on October 1st. He said the commission wanted to give time for the public to become aware of the tipping fee.
“I’ve been in contact with a few people who pick up trash for residential for a living and they’re going to have to adjust their prices and things of that nature,” Barlow said. “So that gives everyone a chance to go out and spread the word that it’s not just them going up, it’s costing them more to pick up everybody’s trash off. So it affects lots of people in that nature so for that we’re sorry.”
Barlow said garbage is the second-most expensive thing that the county has to deal with.
