Overton County Executive Steven Barlow said he is continuing efforts to recruit a grocery store to the Hanging Limb community.
Barlow said he submitted the area’s demographics to a local company for consideration.
“We had to go back and get the population, and they have to take it back to the grocery store committee and make sure, because they have a board they have to go through to get approval to be able to do these things,” Barlow said. “Now, it is in their hands.”
Barlow said it is now up to the owner to consider expanding. Barlow said the grocery store company is already located within the county. Barlow said he wanted to speak with the local chain before reaching out to a commercial business.
“It is as much as 14 miles to the closest grocery store up there,” Barlow said. “We are looking into trying to help the citizens there for them to be able to go and buy their own groceries.”
Since elected county executive, Barlow said he has heard from residents that a grocery store is needed in the southeast portion of the county. Barlow said usually, they have to travel out-of-county for food.
