The Upper Cumberland Diversity Advocates are hosting a special meeting on 9/11 to recognize diverse groups and promote togetherness.
President John McArthur said the meeting will have Cumberland County resident Dr. Svend Abrahamsen speaking about his experience during 9/11 as he was a physician in New York on the day of the tragic event. McArthur said it is the organization’s goal to discuss issues regarding diversity in the country.
“New York is probably the most diverse city in the world,” McArthur said. “As a result of the events of 9/11, all these folks from different cultures and different socioeconomic levels all basically banned together to deal with this crisis.”
The event will have refreshments and a question period to ask about details of Abrahamsen’s experience. McArthur said he wants those who attend the meeting to learn that even though the country has diversity everyone is still trying to achieve the same goal.
“Although we are a very diverse nation with people from many backgrounds,” McArthur said. “At the end of the day, we are Americans and we have a common interest going forward as the United States not as red and blue states.”
McArthur said throughout history in times of tragedy America has put differences aside and come together to overcome hardships.
“We as Americans pull together in times of tragedy,” McArthur said. “I think New York was noted that particular day of really coming together as a community. A very diverse community and pulling together and surviving it.”
The meeting will be held at the Art Circle Public Library in Crossville. The meeting is free of charge and will begin on Wednesday, September 11th, at 2:00 PM.
