New Poplar Grove Precinct Approved By Election Commission

After several months of searching, the Putnam County Poplar Grove precinct has a new voting location.

Election Commission Chair Phil Adams said members approved Caney Fork Baptist Church on Highway 70.

“It’s a fairly new church,” Adams said. “It’s exactly three miles from the other location, so it’s in that same proximity which is wonderful. Newer facility, nicer bathrooms, much nicer parking lot and easier access.”

The district outgrew the previous voting location at Poplar Grove Community Center. Adams said the new location will open for the August election.

“The minister and the elders accepted it,” Adams said. “We have somebody going over there next week to actually take the contract for them to sign. Unless something comes up between now and then, we see no problem.”

Adams said the church is right on the edge of the half mile limit allowed for relocation without state approval. Adams said Election Administrator Michelle Honeycutt is working with the state to determine if any further action is needed.

“This would not be the only one outside the district, but it is close enough to the other one that we were trying to get within a few mile radius, so people would be in an area they are familiar with,” Adams said. “This accomplishes this very well.”

Adams said the commission and church are both excited for the opportunity.
