New Gateway Signs Approved For 2 I-40 Cookeville Exits

Cookeville has received final approval to install gateway monument signs at the Interstate 40 exits on Willow Avenue and Jefferson Avenue.

Community Development Director Jon Ward said the signs will read “Cookeville, Home of Tennessee Tech.” He said the project is part of T-DOT’s Gateway Monument program. Ward said TDOT has a significant list of reviews and requirements required for a project around a busy highway like this one, but the city has received final approval.

“We’ve always tried to find ways to enhance our entries,” Ward said. “The entrances into the community and we think these are going to be very nice-looking signs to just welcome people into our community.”

Ward said a grading plan has to be developed before the construction of the signs can begin, but he is excited to see the project finally coming to fruition.

“There’s been quite a bit of partnership there with Tech to do something and, you know, they’re a big part of our community and we’re happy to have them here and happy to partner with them,” Ward said.

He said Tech originally approached the city and suggested the idea of adding a welcome sign. The initial plan, Ward said, was to install a sign on the Jefferson Avenue exit, but the plans have only expanded since.

“There are several communities that have examples of these in the state and we’re looking forward to putting one up with our name on it,” Ward said.
